Consumer Culture

Consumer culture refers to consumption patterns which shape society in a sociocultural, experiential, symbolic,or ideological manner. Because cultural meanings are varied and numerous, consumer culture can refer to both a larger homogeneous construct–such as American culture–or to smaller shared meanings among different groups. Many theoretical stances seek to deconstruct and understand consumer culture. Regardless of which stance is taken, it cannot be denied that consumerism is part of an interconnected system of culture and resources which helps construct one’s social identity and relationships.  To learn more about my personal experiences with consumer culture, click the Consumer Culture category.
